How to Upholster Furniture

Don’t throw that chair out yet! Do you know how easy it is to reupholster a chair? Years ago when I was raising my children, there were these two guys on television who used to reupholster everything. They taught very well. Since that time, I have done chairs, stools, dining room chairs and living room furniture. Personally, I like to reupholster a chair better than putting chair covers on them. If I want, I can match the cushion on the chair to the drapery in the room. Of course, you can just make cushions but if a chair is worn, just reupholster it.

1. Turn the chair upside down and unscrew the seat from the frame. Make sure to keep the screws in a safe place.
2. Most chair coverings are stapled on. You must remove all of the staples. Then just remove the covering that is on.
3. If the foam is worn, then this is the time to replace it. If it isn’t but you want more cushion, add a piece of foam to what is already there.
4. Place the seat cushion part down on the material you will be using. Pull up the material around the seat so that you know how much to cut. The entire underneath of the seat does not have to be covered but there must be enough material for you to staple and secure it down.
5. After it is cut, place the seat down again, foam side down. Pull up the material and start stapling. Staple in four corners first and then go around the seat to staple in between making pleats so that the top side is smooth.
6. When this is done, trim away any excess material from under the seat.
7. If you want to add decoration such as cording to the edge of the seat, now is the time to do it. You can easily add cording or braiding with a hot glue gun. It is also a good time to do any touchups on the chair frame or just give them a good cleaning or polishing.
8. When this is all completed, it’s time to put the seat back on to the frame. With the frame upside down, place the seat in position and put in the first screw. This part is easier if you have two people or something holding the seat on to the frame. Sometimes I hand the frame over the side of a table or counter to do this. You may also have to make a small hole in the fabric for the screw to pass through.

There you have it. A new seat cover, a fixed chair or just more cushion. It’s easy, it’s fun and it will make your old chairs feel like new.

How To Decorate With Flower Arrangements

Sometimes, when you look around a room in your home and it can be any room, there seems to be something missing. Many times, a simple flower arrangement can bring the room together and give it the personality that is missing. Usually if I keep looking around one of the rooms in my home and feel that it is just not right, I will take a flower arrangement from another room to see if that is what is needed. It is the one thing that will make it look finished. That’s when I know that I need to get another flower arrangement.

There are many ways that you can use plastic or silk flowers around your home. I have at least one arrangement in each room and no more than two. Here are some unique ways to use silk or plastic flowers around the home.

Some kitchen cabinets do not go up to the ceiling. Some people tend to use the top as a shelf for kitchen gadgets or to display dishes. Instead, I purchased large silk flowers, about 5 inches in diameter each and the same color as the kitchen. I placed them at the top edge of the cabinets about twelve inches apart and filled in between each flower with green ferns. It really did bring some life into the kitchen.

If you have picture window or alcove, purchase a five foot or longer swag made with large flowers and place it over the middle of the window.

Use the top of a china closet or hutch to display flowers. The taller the ceilings, the taller the arrangement. You want the eye to go up to the ceiling. Use tall vases and place long bamboo sticks in them to reach the height that you need. If using a flower arrangement, place it on top of a decorative box to make it taller.
If you have vaulted ceilings, hang a large silk plant in a corner of the room. Make sure that it takes up at least three to four feet of space from the ceiling down.

Use six foot or higher trees in corners or behind furniture. Again, these can be placed on boxes (if hidden) or on end tables for a taller effect.

Use a four foot silk tree with flowers on an end table.

When using flower arrangements on dining tables, make a statement. Tall flower arrangements tend to be very elegant. Even just a tall vase with bamboo sticks in it is pretty to have on a dining table or end table.
The idea here is that when using flower arrangements, the fuller and taller the arrangement, the less you need to use and the prettier they look. A lot is not always better. Make a statement with just a few but make those few memorable.

How do you use flower arrangements around your home? If you would like to share your ideas or have any questions, please post in the comment section. I always enjoy reading comments.

How To Use Rope Lighting

Several years ago, rope lights were sold by the foot and were only available through electrical supply stores. Today, they can be purchased in just about any store from home improvement stores to your local department store throughout the year. Rope lighting can be used in so many ways that it is almost impossible to list them all. It is inexpensive and comes in a variety of colors, lengths, widths and shapes (round or rectangular). It’s time to get creative with rope lights.Rope lighting is actually accent lighting that consists of small lights in a tube. It can be stationery, blinking or chasing lights. Some will even blink to the sounds of music. Since it is extremely flexible, it can be wrapped around almost anything or be made into shapes. It is also good for use indoors or outdoors and is weather resistant. A ten foot strip of rope lighting uses about the same amount of energy as a sixty watt bulb producing a very soft glow of light. Today, LED rope lighting is also now available.

Indoors Uses

Under kitchen cabinets - against the wall reflecting on to the counter top
On the tops of kitchen cabinets - against the wall reflecting towards the ceiling
Under the kitchen counter reflecting towards the floor
Along baseboards of the living room behind plants and furniture for upward light that creates shadows
Along the shelf of a vaulted ceiling
On a staircase or banister
Along a hallway floor
In a child’s bedroom for use as a night light
Inside of glass cabinets
Along a bathroom ceiling

Outdoor Uses

Use to line the walkway
Along the driveway
Use around a flower bed
Wrap around trees and shrubs
Along the outside of a pool
Place round the outside of a pond
Under a deck handrail
Along deck steps (added safety)
Around the deck of a boat
Under a home bar top rail (indoor or outdoor)
Along the edge of the floor of a patio
Along the roof of the house
Under a fence
Around a trellis or gazebo
Along landscape timbers

As with all types of lighting, remember to use rope lighting safely. Do not enclose or overheat these lights. Keep them away from fireplaces and other heat sources. Do not use any rope lighting that is cracked, split or damaged in any way.

I have been a fan of rope lighting since it first hit the stores. I use it along the vaulted ceiling of the family room and along the far edge of the pool. It is also along the floor of our outdoor entertainment room which creates a very relaxing atmosphere. The uses for this type of lighting is so limitless. Take a look around your home, both interior and exterior, and let your imagination take over, have some fun and try getting creative with rope lights.

There were just some ideas for using rope lights. If you have other ideas or use rope lights in different ways, please share them with us.
