Living Room And Interior Design Tips
If you don’t have an Interior Design or you hate your living room then don’t worry too much about it. There are a lot of minor adjustments you can make without breaking the bank. These 10 easy tricks can help modify your living room into something spectacular.
1. Focal Point
Every room should have a focal point which means pick a plan for the room. Make sure that your guests are able to talk to each other without hollering. The furniture should be positioned around the focal point which is an architectural feature like a fireplace, flat screen TV, or a piece of artwork. Once you’ve selected the focal point arrange the furniture accordingly.
2. De-Clutter
Unfortunately many people don’t know how to dispose of things. Having too many things in a room can make it feel smaller and chaotic. If you can’t throw or give away certain things then put them in storage because a messy room will spoil the look that you’re going for.
3. Define the Area
Area rugs are a great way to define the living room. It can bring attention to the discussion area. It doesn’t matter if its basic or showy it creates visual definition that either adds or ties the room together.
4. Details
Details like architectural features add detail. But furnishings are also a great way to energize the room. You don’t want a gaudy room but you also don’t want a bare one. Having assets on the wall can make it feel both homey and elegant.
5. Paint
As a common rule the flooring should be darker than the walls. The color of the flooring grounds the space and balances it. And having a fresh coat of lighter paint can transform your living room. A fresh coat of paint can totally change the appearance and feel of a room.
6. Lights
There are different types of lighting and you should vary them all through the room. There should be lighting for different scenarios like reading, watching TV, and parties. But be certain to keep away from one single light fixture overhead.
7. Foliage
Adding some plant life to your living space adds color and life. Plus it makes the room feel more alive and keeps the air cleaner. Silk plants can add some appeal to the room but it doesn’t measure up to a real one.
8. Mirrors
Mirrors can really open up a room, but be careful about where you hang them. If you put it where you or your guests can constantly see yourselves, it is disturbing and makes everyone uncomfortable.
9. Furniture on an Angle
Steer clear of placing your furniture next to the wall and make the room more appealing by placing it on the diagonal. It improves the layout and adds vigor to the room.
10. Add Color
In this world there are people that avoid color and those that overuse it, but finding the correct balance can be tricky. Choose neutral furnishings and add color through pillows, trimmings, and art.
Living rooms should be lived in but not appear like they’re lived in. They should characterize who you are but if your living room needs some sprucing up then these top 10 tips can turn your ordinary room into a complete masterpiece.

You’ve given me lots of things to think about after reading your article.
I keep reading about having a focal point in your room and I think mine will be a stone fireplace. I want to achieve the “log cabin” feel so I think a nice braided rug in front of the fireplace might work.
We are going to have nice dark hardwood floors and I’m trying to come up with a nice earth-tone paint color for the great room. Maybe a shade of green? Gold?
I like the idea of putting furniture at an angle too.

Gold is a really nice color, not the brassy color of gold, but a bronze tint of gold. With dark hardwood floors, I would definitely go for a shade lighter than the floors. Too much dark and you may feel too closed in.
