There are two main types of wood burning stove to choose from – those that burn wood, and those that burn pellets. It may seem strange to buy an eco-friendly stove and then burn man-made pellets, but some people see pellets as a far better choice than wood.                             

Firstly, pellets are actually made from waste wood, for example sawdust. This wood is already scrap and would otherwise go to waste so burning it is a form of recycling – no trees have to be cut down to provide fuel for a pellet stove. Secondly, pellets are uniform and burn in a predictable manner. Wood on the other hand can burn at a different rate depending on the size of the log, type of wood etc, making pellets a good solution for people looking for a hassle-free stove. Thirdly, pellets can be fed automatically into the stove based on a timer. If you want your stove to take care of itself, this makes for a lot less work than having to check the stove and feed it wood all the time.

Wood stoves don’t just take different types of fuel; they also provide different types of heating. Some stoves for example just heat the room they’re in and since you’re not relying on the stove for hot water or cooking, using wood might be a good solution. After all, nothing beats the cosy feeling of a real wood fire you’ve built yourself. Other stoves have back boilers fitted to provide heat for the whole home. These work in much the same way as your ordinary boiler, except you have to make sure to stoke the fire if you want a warm house! Wood burning cooking stoves are an increasingly popular option for the kitchen; not only do they produce wonderful food, they can also be combined with a back boiler to provide hot water and heating for the entire home. It might seem like a daunting prospect cooking on a wood stove, but converts say that food cooks more evenly than with gas or electric and tastes even better!

Finally, you can get pure wood burning boilers for heating and hot water. These may use a continuous fire, or they may simply store hot water so that it’s still available even if the boiler is off. Remember that if they burn wood they need to be fed by hand. If they burn pellets this can be automated (because pellets are a uniform size and can be machine-fed into the boiler). However, any stove that uses automation requires a power supply so in case of a power cut, the boiler will need to be fed by hand again.

Put simply, there is a type of wood stove for every possible application in the home, whether you want to replace your living room fireplace or your whole central heating system. Pellets and automation have even made stoves low maintenance, whilst still being cheaper to run than your traditional gas or electric heating.
