Tips on Choosing a Wood Burning Stove
Wood burning stoves come in a whole host of shapes, sizes, colours and styles. It’s usually the look of a stove that attracts people to them in the first place; after all, there’s nothing more homely than a having wood burning stove as the focal point of a room. This is unfortunately the wrong way to go about choosing a stove however; although the look is obviously important, a stove just isn’t a feature in your room, it provides a valuable function and getting this right should be your top priority.
The very first thing you need to check when buying a wood stove is if you’re actually allowed to have one in your area. Some local councils have placed restrictions on the level of emissions in their area, so you may need to choose a stove that is highly efficient to meet regulations where you live.
If you are allowed to install a wood stove, the main thing you need to decide is how much heat you want it to generate. Heat output is usually measured in kWh and different stoves will have different outputs, even if they look the same size. Factors to think about include the size of the area you want the stove to heat, the climate in your part of the world, and the existing insulation in your home. A lot of people don’t realise that stoves work best when they’re running at full capacity; this allows for really efficient burning, cutting down on soot and making sure you get the best airflow (all good things for the health of your stove).
The second factor is installation; this can be very expensive, especially if you need a chimney liner or a flue. It can actually double the cost of your stove so when budgeting make sure add this onto the price. When choosing your stove you might come to realise it’s not all about looks – cost, heat output and efficiency are all very important and remember, your stove is a functional object so if it doesn’t heat your home very well it’s wasted money. There are so many stoves to choose from however, you’re sure to find the perfect one for your home.
