Man’s Room

What is a man’s room? I’m sure a lot of homes have had a man’s room for many years without even knowing about it. Today’s new man’s room is teaming up with today’s technology.
When thinking about this, my own father could have been the inventor of this. He is an avid collector of antique newspapers and song sheets and anything else paper. Then throw in some depression glass and anything else that catches his eye. When we were grown and out of the house, he hastily grabbed one of the bedrooms and called it his own. My mother was not a collector and was very willing and happy to give him his own room. The antique room or dad’s room is what it is called and no one enters it without permission.
So today, men are claiming a room of their own. Whether it is an extra bedroom or office, the basement or the family room. Men are no longer restricting their territory to the garden shed or garage. They have moved into the family residence.
When decorating a man’s room, it’s probably better to let him decide wall colors and floor coverings. The man’s room in our home is actually the family room since it was the only room large enough for a pool table. I was involved in creating it since I was going to be the one that would probably be cleaning it. One of the best things we did was cover the bottom half of the walls with leather-like material which keeps them clean and damage free from pool sticks and pool balls. We made use out of every inch of this room in order to display his continuously growing collections. Yes, he is a collector too. Since the room has vaulted ceilings, we put shelves very high so that collectibles were out of the way. The room is complete with stereo system and television.
Every man’s room is going to be unique and different. Some will have card tables while others will resemble a media room with a wide screen television. Others might be a music room with instruments (my brother has one of these) while others will opt for a bar or computer equipment. The best man-cave site I have come across has to be The Mantuary. Do check it out sometime.
