Home Office

Since just about everyone has a computer today, there seems to be more of a need for a home office. Not every home has the room for a separate home office.  Most times an extra bedroom or even the dining room will be used for this purpose.  Wherever it is, there are some things that you can do to make it more comfortable and work friendly.  Any small spot in a room can work as a home office as long as you fix it the right way.  This article at Realsimple.com gives advice and offers great ideas on creating a spot for a home office in the kitchen.

Chair
The first most important thing is to have a comfortable chair.  Make sure that it supports your back.  Visit office supply stores and sit on them, just as you would with a mattress.  See which one is right for you.

Desk
Create a work space for your computer.  If your office is in the corner of a room, get a small desk that is less conspicuous.  Make sure it has side shelves to hold a printer and/or fax machine.  Try keeping the top of the desk clean at all times.

Lighting
Even though you can see the computer, have a desk light for when it starts to get dark or for the early morning.

Files/Storage
Get a file box that can fit under the desk in order to save space.  If it is plastic, it can also double as a place to rest your legs on when sitting.

Place small office supplies in decorative boxes (hat boxes) that match your room décor.

Decoration

  • If you are facing a wall, put an outdoor themed picture over the desk so that you have something refreshing  to look at.
  • Put a silk plant or small vase of silk flowers on your desk.
  • Don’t overload with office supplies.  Keep it neat and clean and uncluttered.

Wherever your home office may be located in your home, make it comfortable.  Create a design you like and can live with so that you enjoy it and it energizes you to be productive.

If you have a home office design that you would like to share with the rest of us, we would love to hear about it.

  1. This is a powerful reminder to me to clean off my desk! I know I am much more productive when my desk is completely clear and clutter-free. I do have several pictures up, including one of the patron of writers, and hopefully that helps for inspiration, or just gives my eyes a break.

  2. I know I let my desk get out of hand sometimes too. Just have to make it a point to keep it clean. Thank you for leaving a comment.
